I'm thrilled to announce that I've been selected by the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship Trust to become a scholar! QEST supports individuals representing excellence in British Craft, providing them with the means to gain further training and keep traditional alive. All round best babes!
This is a HUGE deal for me - I've worked hard to get where I am, but there are no longer any apprenticeships or accredited courses available in the UK for those wanting to gain further bookbinding skills. Through this insanely generous award I'll be able to spend a year being mentored by Designer Bookbinder Fellow Tom McEwan, learning the traditional skills of a fine binder from a maker who constantly challenges himself to apply these methods in contemporary ways. I'll also get to spend weeks in some of Europe's best bookbinding schools from expert tutors! So many brains to pick, and I'll be sharing what I learn here.
I really feel like this marks a massive milestone for me - it's a year ago since I left my job in commercial bookbinders to set out on my own and pursue creative and contemporary bookbinding, in a way that fulfils me. Let's be honest, it's a pretty niche job and there have been times I've felt like I'll never get anywhere, but this will make a life long career with books a reality!
I really cannot wait to get my hands in action and learn the skills of a fine binder.
Let's make some books!! 💪📚❤
