Workshop - introduction to foil blocking- 3.8.24

£105.00

Saturday 3rd August - 10am - 5pm

I’m opening up my studio for a very small number of places this autumn, and this one is aimed at bookbinders or makers looking to deepen their understanding of the foil blocking process.

Foil blocking (also known as stamping or foiling) is the process of applying a design, marks or words to bookcloth, paper or leather using heat and foils. Striking and bold when applied correctly, this is a process that has many variables and can be challenging, and is hard to learn outside of a professional bindery.

During my training I specialised in foil blocking, and during this course I’ll share all my tips and tricks that I’ve learned for great blocking. It’s one of my favourite processes and is an important skill to learn, so I’m excited to share!

You’ll learn:

  • Different types of foil blocking options

  • How to select materials for foil blocking

  • How to prepare a digital file for die production

  • Suppliers and manufacturers

  • Blocking titles on books using metal letters

  • Blocking a design using a metal die

  • Hand tooling using foils and brass finishing tools

We’ll focus on the foil blocking so I’ll prepare sample panels for us to learn on. You may be able to bring along a case or material to test, and I’ll share more details on this in an email nearer the date. Workshops run from 10am - 5pm from my studio in Bridgeton in the East End of Glasgow. Close to train links, with plenty of free on street parking.

    Hope to see you there!
